Wood Terrace – Update on Parking Consultation

Thank you to those residents and visitors who took part in the recent informal consultation regarding proposed parking restrictions at Wood Terrace.

Following consideration of the responses received, the Council will now proceed to the formal statutory consultation stage.

As part of this next stage:

  • Notices will be posted on site within the affected area
  • A statutory notice will be advertised in the Shields Gazette
  • Full details of the proposal will be made available as part of the formal consultation

Amendment to the proposal

Following officer review, a minor amendment has been made to the initial proposal.
The loading restriction directly in front of Wood Terrace on the southern kerb line has been removed, in order to allow for deliveries.

This amendment is reflected in the proposals being taken forward to formal consultation.

How to comment

The formal consultation provides an opportunity for any person to make formal representations in support of, or in objection to, the proposal.
Details on how to view the proposals and submit comments will be provided within the statutory notices and accompanying consultation information.

All representations received during the formal consultation period will be considered before a final decision is made.

Thank you for your interest in this matter.

We are proposing to introduce a series of new parking and loading controls to better manage how vehicles use the street. The proposals include:

  • Permit parking bays – to prioritise parking for residents and other authorised permit holders.
  • Unrestricted parking bays – to provide limited general‑use parking where appropriate.
  • A new loading restriction – to prevent loading and unloading at specific times where this activity causes obstruction or safety concerns.
  • Retention of the existing ‘No Waiting’ restriction – which will continue to prevent parking in areas where stopping a vehicle would create safety or access issues.

These changes are intended to ensure that parking only takes place in clearly marked and suitable locations. By defining where parking and loading are permitted, the scheme aims to reduce obstructive parking, maintain traffic flow, support access for residents and businesses, and improve overall road safety.

We are now seeking your views on the proposed Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). Your feedback will help us understand how the changes may affect you and will be considered before a final decision is made.

Why your views matter

We want to understand how the proposed parking and loading changes may affect residents, businesses, and people who use the area. Your feedback helps us identify any issues we may not be aware of and ensures that the final Traffic Regulation Order reflects local needs as far as possible.

By taking part, you can:

  • Share any concerns about how the proposals might impact you.
  • Highlight local knowledge that could improve the design.
  • Support the changes if you feel they will benefit the area.
  • Suggest alternatives or adjustments the Council should consider.

All responses will be reviewed before a final decision is made, and your views will help shape the outcome of the scheme.

What happens next

After this informal consultation closes, we will review all comments and suggestions submitted. Your feedback will help us understand any local issues, concerns, or improvements that may need to be considered before we decide whether to progress to the formal Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) stage.

If the proposals are amended following this feedback, the updated scheme will be reviewed internally to ensure it remains suitable and deliverable.

If we decide to move forward, a formal TRO will then be advertised in accordance with statutory procedures. At that stage, there will be another opportunity for the public to submit formal objections or representations before any final decision is made.
