Westoe Road, South Shields - Toucan Crossing
Overview
South Tyneside Council's Traffic and Road Safety Team (STC) wants to hear from residents about a new proposal for a Toucan Crossing on Westoe Road, South Shields.
As part of STC’s ongoing efforts to make our roads safer for everyone, Active Travel has identified Westoe Road as a key spot for a new crossing. This would connect the two sections of the cycleway that cross Westoe Road, making it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to get around.
The concept drawing outlines various works, including footway improvements, carriageway surfacing, and tactile paving to enhance accessibility. We know there are already other signalised crossings nearby. The plan is to sync these signals so drivers won't get stuck at both red lights. If needed, both lights will turn red at the same time. This way, the new crossing shouldn't affect the current traffic flow.
We’re running a consultation exercise to gather your thoughts and feedback on this proposal. Your input is crucial to help us make the best decision for our community.
