Stanhope Road, South Shields - School Safety Scheme
Overview
As part of South Tyneside Council’s ongoing commitments to create a safer environment for all highway users, it is proposed to make school safety improvements on Stanhope Road, South Shields. The aim of the scheme is to create a safe crossing point for pedestrians and school pupils 24 hours a day through the implementation of a parallel crossing and improving the School Safety Zone by undergoing some highway improvements.
As part of the designing of this scheme, a road safety audit showed there were issues with the locality in which vehicles stack behind the bus stop nearest Ashley Road. In order to try and alleviate this issue, the team propose to move the bus stop south-westerly to a position opposite Whitehall Street. The team understand the movement of the bus stop may remove some on-street parking; therefore, it is proposed that the kerb line where the bus stop currently is located is removed and set back to ensure this is resolved. The plans would increase the level of on-street parking.
