St Marys Area - Formal Consultation
Overview
South Tyneside Council's Traffic and Road Safety Team (STC) is seeking feedback from residents on a proposal to implement junction protection and crossing improvements around the St Marys area.
As part of STC's ongoing commitment to creating a safer environment for all highway users, the scheme has been drafted and allocated funding. This includes measures such as junction protection with yellow lines, school keep clears and dropped crossing points to enhance safety around schools.
Following an informal consultation with local residents regarding the proposal to implement parking restrictions within the St Marys Area, the Road Safety team are now looking to proceed with the formal consultation stage of the proposal.
We have carried out the informal consultation with residents within the area. Following the informal consultation dated 27/06/2025 – 18/07/2025 please see below a breakdown of the results of the consultation.
Total Responses Received: 24
In favour: 9 (38%)
Against: 14 (58%)
Neither for nor against: 1 (4%)
Most residents that had concerns with the proposals stated that they would not be enforced, with reference to the existing school street in the area. In addition to requests to extend restrictions to other junctions.
Addressing the comments that were shared by residents, we must clarify that the enforcement of the existing school street belongs with Northumbria Police. Ultimately, our priority is still to provide safe crossing points for pedestrians travelling to and from the local schools.
Please see the below plans and legal notice for the proposals.
Details of the proposals are shown on a plan which may be inspected from Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm at the Town Hall, Westoe Road, South Shields NE33 2RL. Alternatively you can request a copy of the documentation by emailing roadsafetyconsultations@southtyneside.gov.uk
