Reading Road Area and Temple Park Road, South Shields - School Safety Improvements
Overview
South Tyneside Council’s Traffic and Road Safety Team is writing to follow up on a recent consultation regarding proposed parking restrictions in the vicinity of Reading Road, South Shields.
The consultation received a strong response, with 50 residents sharing their views:
- 25 supported the proposals
- 23 opposed them
- 2 expressed no strong opinion
In light of the feedback received, the team proposes moving forward with implementing restrictions at all junctions fronting Reading Road, as well as the measures outside the school. These elements of the scheme appear to be the least contentious and offer the greatest benefits in terms of safety and accessibility.
Additionally, the team is now in a position to consult on a proposed zebra crossing on Temple Park Road. The school crossing patrol currently operating at this location plays a vital role in ensuring pedestrian safety for those travelling to and from local schools.
It is important to note that there are no plans to remove existing crossing patrols. The proposed zebra crossing is intended as a contingency measure to futureproof the crossing point.
The General Arrangement drawing illustrates the proposed crossing, while the TRO Consultation drawing (TRS05-LTP-2025 01-1) provides an overview of the wider road safety scheme for Reading Road, including junction protection and improvements around Mortimer Community College. Supplementary plans offer detailed views of each junction.
If you would like a physical copy of the drawings, please contact Parking Services on 0191 424 7900. Please note: this number is for requesting drawings only. Staff on this line will not be able to discuss the scheme, and all comments must be submitted through the specified consultation channels.
We would like to emphasise that the purpose of this letter is to seek feedback from all properties within the vicinity of the proposed restrictions. No final decisions have been made at this stage.
The proposals can be seen below.
