St George’s Avenue calming measure

Closed 9 Aug 2024

Opened 19 Jul 2024

Overview

In November 2023 the trial Safer Neighbourhood Scheme was implemented using powers granted by an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO). The trial saw the closure of St Georges Avenue, at its junction with Cemetery Approach, South Shields.

During the trial period, officers gathered data including traffic speeds and volumes, collision statistics, feedback from members of the public and undertook various onsite observations of traffic distribution and behaviours. The information collected was collated and presented to South Tyneside Councils Lead Member for Neighbourhoods and Climate Change Cllr Ernest Gibson.

The decision was made to remove the trial and the measures were officially removed on 13th March 2024. Cllr Gibson requested that officers look at alternative measures to improve road safety in the area.

Officers have now prepared a traffic calming proposal throughout the Readhead Park area encompassing St Georges Avenue, Tynedale Road, Readhead Road and their connecting streets. The primary aims of the proposal are to reduce vehicle speeds and discourage heavy vehicles and ‘through traffic’ from using the route through residential streets.
