Mortimer Road/ Cauldwell Avenue Junction, South Shields – Traffic and Road Safety Scheme

Closed 27 Aug 2023

Opened 28 Jul 2023

Overview

South Tyneside Councils Highways Department is consulting on a proposed highway improvement scheme in your area.

Due to the volume of vehicular traffic accessing Mortimer Road from its junction with Cauldwell Avenue, the mini roundabout has been highlighted as a key junction for safety improvements, particularly at school pick up and drop off times.

The aim of the scheme is to improve the flow of vehicular traffic on Mortimer Road and also improve road safety. The proposal would see the existing mini roundabout removed and access to Mortimer Road via Cauldwell Avenue unavailable.

Although alternative access to Mortimer Road from Cauldwell Avenue via Warwick Road, Banbury Terrace and Cauldwell Villas would be unrestricted.

In additional to this, the team are also proposing to install a puffin crossing just south of Mortimer Roads junction with Mortimer Primary School access road to create a safe crossing point for pedestrians and a school pupils 24 hours a day.

Please find the enclosed plan which show the detail of the proposals.

Why your views matter

Your views are important as we develop this project and it's outcomes. By letting us know what you, the resident of South Tyneside would like to see, we will be able to make appropriate changes to the scheme to ensure that it has the best chance of becoming a fundamental and worthwhile part of South Tynesides Highway Network.

To ensure any amendments can be incorporated into the proposals, this consultation will end on 27th August.

What happens next

Once the consultation process concludes we will spend some time analysing the data and report back to the public. Design changes will be fed to the Designers to consider and subject to viability may make their way into the final scheme.
