Lizard Lane Traffic Calming Scheme
Overview
South Tyneside Councils Highways Department is consulting on a proposed traffic calming scheme in your area.
The proposal will introduce a 20mph Zone on Lizard Lane throughout the entire section of the road that is currently subject to a 30mph speed restriction. In order to support the introduction of the 20mph Zone, the existing speed cushions throughout this section of road will be upgraded and improved which will help maintain lower vehicle speeds and create a safer environment for highway users.
Additionally, a narrowing chicane will be installed prior to the residential properties (north of Lizard Lanes junction with Fairfield Drive). Priority will be given to vehicles travelling northbound and the chicane will require vehicles travelling southbound, towards Whitburn, to slow down and give-way.
All the proposed speed cushion locations have been chosen in accordance with design guidance and standards set by the Department for Transport. This is to ensure that motorists maintain a constant vehicle speed and are deterred from accelerating and braking between features which results in a passive style of driving, at a lower but constant speed, contributing to lower noise levels. The chosen locations of each speed cushion will not be directly outside existing driveways to prevent any difficulty with vehicles accessing/ egressing a property.
The upgraded speed cushions be made from recycled rubber and feature a modular design.
Why your views matter
Your views are important as we develop this project and it's outcomes. By letting us know what you, the resident of South Tyneside would like to see, we will be able to make appropriate changes to the scheme to ensure that it has the best chance of becoming a fundamental and worthwhile part of South Tynesides Highway Network.
To ensure any amendments can be incorporated into the proposals, this consultation will end on 27/08/23.
What happens next
Once the consultation process concludes we will spend some time analysing the data and report back to the public. Design changes will be fed to the Designers to consider and subject to viability may make their way into the final scheme.
