Overview

We propose to make changes to the on-street parking arrangements on Highfield Road, South Shields adjacent to the small parade of shops with residential flats above near Highfield Service Station.

As some residents are aware, parking in this area is extremely limited. It has become increasingly difficult for those living in the flats or visiting the shops to find a convenient space due to the number of vehicles associated with the nearby Highfield Service Centre occupying most of the available bays throughout the day.

In response to ongoing concerns raised by residents, we are proposing the following changes:

  1. A slight reduction in the length of the existing loading bay to free up space for additional parking bays.
  2. Introduction of new marked parking bays with the following conditions:

    • 20-minute maximum stay
    • No return within 2 hours
    • Resident permit holders exempt from the time limit
  3. Introduction of No Waiting at Any Time & No Loading / Unloading at any time in front of Highfield Service Centre to reduce obstructions and encourage use of the Loading Bay.

These changes aim to improve traffic flow and turnover of parking bays for short visits to local shops while ensuring residents have a fair opportunity to park near their homes.

We understand this may not be welcomed by all, particularly the garage who may be impacted by the reduction in long-stay availability. However, the intent is to create a fairer balance between residential needs and commercial operations.
