Highfield Road, South Shields - Road Safety Improvements

Closes 30 Jun 2025

Opened 5 Jun 2025

Overview

South Tyneside Council’s Traffic and Road Safety Team (STC) is seeking feedback from residents on a proposal to implement road safety improvements along Highfield Road, South Shields. This proposal may impact residents living near the junctions with North View and Highfield Drive, so we encourage you to review the consultation carefully.

As part of STC’s ongoing commitment to improving safety and accessibility for all road users, a scheme has been drafted and allocated funding. The proposed measures include:

  • Junction protection with double yellow lines
  • Installation of pedestrian guardrails
  • Resurfacing and reconstruction of sections of the carriageway and footway
  • An uncontrolled pedestrian crossing with buff tactile paving
  • New road markings and signage

The TRO Consultation drawing (TRS12-BUS-2025 01-1) provides an overview of the proposed scheme. It highlights the specific safety enhancements planned for the area, particularly around the bus stop and junctions where visibility and access have been problematic.

The team recognises that these changes may affect some residents more than others, especially those living near the proposed restrictions. We encourage these residents to share their views and raise any concerns during the consultation process. Every effort has been made to minimise disruption while addressing the safety issues identified.
