Overview

South Tyneside Councils Highways Department are consulting on a proposed traffic calming scheme in your area.

In our ongoing efforts to reduce road traffic collisions and improve road safety, South Tyneside Council are proposing to install traffic calming on Galsworthy Road and Whiteleas Way and introduce a 20mph speed limit.

It is envisaged the traffic calming will help maintain low vehicle speeds and create a safer environment for highway users. This proposed measure will continue the existing 20mph zone present throughout the Whiteleas area.

All the proposed traffic calming locations have been chosen in accordance with design guidance and standards set by the Department for Transport. This is to ensure that motorists maintain a constant vehicle speed and are deterred from accelerating and braking between features which results in a passive style of driving, at a lower but constant speed, contributing to lower noise levels. The chosen locations of each road hump will not be directly outside existing driveways to prevent any difficulty with vehicles accessing/ egressing a property.
