Foreshore Area Parking Proposals
Overview
South Tyneside Council’s Traffic and Road Safety Team is seeking feedback from residents regarding a proposal to introduce permit parking in the streets surrounding the Foreshore area in South Shields.
During the summer months, this area becomes particularly busy, and parking demand often exceeds availability. This can result in visitors occupying spaces that would otherwise be used by residents. To help address this issue, we are considering the introduction of a permit parking scheme and pay and display parking.
Please see the below plans showing the proposed parking arrangements in detail.
These include:
- Permit Holders Only areas (8am–8pm)
- Permit Holders or Pay & Display bays (8am–8pm)

Permit Costs and Seasonal Operation
If the scheme is introduced, residents will be able to apply for a parking permit:
- First resident permit: Free of charge first year then £20 per year to renew. An additional permit will cost £20 per vehicle (up to a maximum of 2 resident permits per property) with consideration given to properties if additional permits are required.
- Visitor permits: £10 per book/sessions of 25 daily permits (maximum of 4 books or 100 visitor sessions) per year.
- Free permits are available for residents over 65 or those with a disabled badge
Please note: Areas not currently highlighted on the plans will still be subject to parking restrictions (such as yellow lines). These will be reviewed and addressed at a later stage once support for the proposals has been determined, and the overall scheme has been finalised.
We recognise that the proposed changes may affect some residents more than others and we encourage all residents to share their views during this consultation period.
