We had a good response to this consultation. The results were evenly split with some responders in favour of the creation of additional parking bays and some against it, as they fear it may attract more vehicles to the area at night and result in anti social behaviour. Residents were also apprehensive about the introduction of a permit parking scheme and felt they would need a public consultation prior to any agreement.

Therfore this scheme will be put on hold whilst further discussions take place and matters arising out of associated land searches are finalised.

We will update this page as and when we know more.

Overview

South Tyneside Council parking services team have been asked to address parking issues in Coniston Avenue, Hebburn.

Coniston Avenue is a cul-de-sac made up of terraced houses with a small block of commercial units situated in the middle. The carriageway is narrow and there is a lack of available parking.

The situation can often be exacerbated at school times when parents of children attending the nearby school park in Coniston Avenue whilst picking up and dropping off.

We propose to construct a row of new parking bays opposite the retail units which would be available to the public and introduce a permit parking scheme for residents and business owners.

This would ensure that visitors to the commercial units would have ample parking opportunities, and they would not encroach on resident parking space.

Any vehicle parked in Coniston Avenue outside these new bays without displaying a valid permit would be liable to receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

Cost

Resident parking permits cost £50 for your first year, then £20 per year to renew.

You can get a permit free of charge if you:

(Costs are subject to change depending on timeframe of the scheme)
