Sustainability Appraisal

Overview

As part of the draft Local Plan consultation, we are also consulting on the Sustainability Appraisal.

The purpose of the sustainability appraisal process is to appraise the social, environmental and economic effects of a plan from the outset. In doing so it will help ensure that decisions are made that contribute to achieving sustainable development.

The sustainability appraisal is integral to the plan making process. It performs a key role in providing a sound evidence base for the plan and forms an integrated part of the plan preparation process. It should be transparent and open to public participation. The sustainability appraisal should inform the decision making process to facilitate the evaluation of alternatives. It should also help demonstrate that the plan is the most appropriate given the reasonable alternatives.

Why your views matter

The period for representations is an opportunity for you to comment on the content of the sustainability appraisal.

We are asking you to review the sustainability appraisal and make your representations to us with your support or objections and any changes you wish to see.

Key documents are available for reference on the following page. Please click the consultation link below to access further information and submit your response.

What happens next

Following consideration of the public feedback, amendments will be made where appropriate and the council may seek to remove more sites or add new ones depending on what suggestions come forward.

The next stage of consultation (known as Regulation 19) will provide another opportunity for local communities, businesses and other interested stakeholders to comment on content of the draft plan, before the Plan is submitted to the government’s Planning Inspectorate for independent examination.
